Amsterdam Canal Cruises:
Discover the Canals & Amstel

Discover Amsterdam from the water

Amsterdam’s canals and the Amstel River together form one of the city’s most beautiful boating routes. This route takes you past historic buildings, famous bridges, and tranquil stretches of water where the city seems like a distant memory. It’s an ideal route if you want to experience Amsterdam from the water, without the rush, but with plenty of variety.

This sailing route is suitable for both first-time boaters and those who have frequently taken the helm. Before departure, you’ll receive a clear explanation and a water map, so you can relax and set off.

Duration of the route: count on approximately 3 hours of sailing without breaks.

The route in broad outline

This sailing route combines the best of both worlds: the tranquility of the Amstel River and the vibrancy of Amsterdam’s canals. You’ll navigate a logical loop, so you won’t miss anything and can maintain a relaxed steer.

1. Quiet start towards the Amstel

After departure, you’ll first cruise through the wider canals. This is a great way to get used to the boat and navigating the city. The pace is slow here, and you’ll have plenty of time to take in the sights.

You soon notice how the city looks different from the water: houseboats, quays full of greenery and the first monumental buildings passing by.

2. The iconic Amstel

As soon as you enter the Amstel River, the water opens up. This stretch feels more spacious and peaceful than the city center. You sail past familiar sights and iconic buildings, while the city itself seems a little further away.

The Amstel River gives you time to truly enjoy the boating experience. Be extra mindful of the wind and other boats: the water is wider and can feel different than in the canals.

3. Classic canals and back towards the city

After the Amstel River, you’ll sail back into the famous canal belt. Narrow canals, historic facades, and characteristic bridges create that typical Amsterdam feel. Here, everything comes together: tranquility, history, and vibrancy.

You end the route in the heart of the city, with the feeling that you have truly experienced Amsterdam from the water.
